Imperata conferta is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre as well as in Bélep islands, Ile des Pins and near by islets and Loyalty islands (Lifou, Tiga). This species occurs in various habitats and substrates up to 900 m asl. This species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened. Indeed it is consummed by herbivores but it persists in pasture lands and even regenerates after a bushfire event. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 49,402 and 84 km², respectively. Therefore, Imperata conferta is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.

Conservation
Imperata conferta is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in five protected areas : Vallée de la Thy, la Dumbéa, Haute Dumbéa, Aoupinié, Parc des Grandes Fougères.
