Imperata cylindrica is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia where it is widely distributed in the coastal areas of Grande Terre as well as in Ile des Pins, Loyalty islands (Maré, Ouvéa). This species occurs in open habitat in particular in open forest, savanna, shrubland, grassland, roadside in various substrates up to 900 m asl. This species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 49,632 and 68 km², respectively. Therefore, Imperata cylindrica is listed as Least Concern (LC).
