Phragmites karka is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia where it is widely distributed in the east coast area of Grande Terre, with some rare observations in the south (Dumbéa). This species occurs along watercourse and marshland in gallery forest and grassland up to 200 m asl. This species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 6,748 and 64 km², respectively. Therefore, Phragmites karka is listed as Least Concern (LC).
