It is found in dense humid forest at mid and high altitude on ultramafic substrate. This species does not seem globally threatened. Cunonia montana is considered Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Cunonia montana is spread in the central and southern half of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Parc de la Rivière Bleue to Mont Boulinda.
Population
It can be locally abundant. It is known from 12-15 subpopulations.
Habitat
This species is found in humid forest at mid and high altitude (700-1,200 m asl) on ultramafic substrate (except for Dogny station).
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities (Paéoua, Mé Maoya).
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in numerous protected areas : Forêt de Saille, Mont Mou, Mont Do, Rivière bleue, Mont Humboldt, Massif du Kouakoué, Vallée de la Thy, Haute Yaté.
