This species occurs in various habitats and substrates up to 580 m asl. This species is common and it is probably not sufficiently collected. It does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 21,514 and 56 km², respectively. Therefore, Sporobolus elongatus is listed as Least Concern (LC).
