Sporobolus virginicus is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia where it is present mainly in west coast areas of Grande Terre as well as in near by islets, in Loyalty islands (Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa and Tiga), Bélep islands and Ile des Pins. This species occurs in littoral habitats on sandy and calcareous substrates up to 20 m asl. This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 65,010 and 172 km², respectively. Therefore, Sporobolus virginicus is listed as Least Concern (LC).

This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Sporobolus virginicus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area.
