Acianthus bracteatus occurs in high altitude humid forest and is growing in moss mats. On the basis of current data on A. bracteatus, total population size is estimated to be fewer than 250 mature individuals. Using criteria D, A. bracteatus qualifies as Endangered (EN) D.
Geographical area
Acianthus bracteatus is an endemic geophyte orchid of New Caledonia, known only from two localities on Grande Terre : Mont Mou and Boulinda.
Population
According to experts, population size on each locality is around 20 mature individuals. On the basis of current data on A. bracteatus, total population size is estimated to be fewer than 250 mature individuals.
Habitat
Acianthus bracteatus occurs in high altitude humid forest and is growing in moss mats.
Threats
Currently, A. bracteatus does not appear threatened, but impact of wild pigs on its habitat must be monitored.
Conservation
A. bracteactus is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and occurs in one protected area : réserve naturelle du Mont Mou. As the wild pigs could be a possible cause of extinction, population of pigs must be monitored on Boulinda and Mont Mou. It is also recommended to conduct field surveys on other high altitude humid forest.
