Near Threatened (NT) , assessed in 27/04/2015

Hibbertia comptonii is a rare endemic tree restricted to the Central Chain of Grande Terre from massif Inédète to Diahoué, corresponding to five sub-populations. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate on an altitudinal range 500-1000 m asl. Some fire caused by storm could occur in Massif Inédète, but a continuing decline can not be highlighted. Population size of mature individuals is unknown but it would be plausible that it ranges between 500 and 1,500 and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 24 km². A monitoring of the population is highly recommended as a lack of regeneration is observed for all sub-populations without the possibility of lincking it with any kind of threats. Using criteria D, H. comptonii does qualify for Near Threatened, close to Vulnerable (VU) D2.

Geographical area

Hibbertia comptonii is an endemic tree restricted to northeast Central Chain of Grande Terre from Massif Inédète to Diahoué in Pouebo.

Population

Population size is precisely unknown but it could range between 500 and 1,500 mature individuals.

Habitat

It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 500-1000 m asl.

Threats

On the basis of data available, lack of regeneration observed for all sub-populations can not be linked particularly to any threat. Some fire caused by storm on Massif Inédète could however affect some sub-populations. Quality of habitat for every sub-population looks stable.

Conservation

H.comptonii is not protected by legislation. One population occurs in a protected area : réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié.
