Semecarpus poyaensis is a shrub growing up to 2-5 m high endemic from New Caledonia. It is restricted in the Poya and Pouembout area in the north west of GrandeTerre. It occurs in maquis and forests on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 40 and 500 m asl. Its habitat is impacted by recurrent uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Poya. Its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and Extent of Occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to be 88 and 326 km² while the number of locations is estimated to be ten. Therefore, S. poyaensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) according to criterion B1ab(ii,iii,v)+B2ab(ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
Semecarpus poyaensis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted in the Poya and Pouembout area in the north west of GrandeTerre.
Population
The population size is not known. Field observations indicate that the species is locally common in Poya region.
Habitat
This species occurs in maquis and forests on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 40 and 500 m asl.
Threats
Its habitat is impacted by recurrent uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Poya.
Conservation
Semecarpus poyaensis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected areas. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services), responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
