Alstonia coriacea is a shrub growing up to 2-5 m high, endemic from New Caledonia. It is distributed from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Bourail- Houailou area. This species occurs in undergrowth forests but also degraded forests and maquis on ultramafic substrate up to 1,140 m asl. This species is common and seems to fit itself in degraded environments. It also occurs in several protected areas. With an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) are 6,289 and 308 km², respectively, Alstonia coriacea does not seem globally threatened. It is therefore considered Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Alstonia coriacea is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Bourail-Houailou area.
Population
The population size is not known. Field prospections indicate that the species is common and it seems to fit itself in degraded environments. It also occurs in several protected areas.
Habitat
Alstonia coriacea occurs in undergrowth forests but also degraded forests and maquis on ultramafic substrate up to 1,140 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened as it seems to fit itself in degraded environments.
Conservation
Alstonia coriacea is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: Côte Oubliée, Forêt cachée, Forêt de Saille, Foret Nord, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue, Barrage de Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine.
