Mezoneuron rubiginosum is an endemic liana of New Caledonia occurring in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary or calcareous substrates. It sparsely occurs in Grande Terre (Koumac, Boguen) and in Lifou and Walpole at an altitudinal range 0-250m. Population size is unknown. This species has been only occasionnaly observed due to the difficulty to see it on the top of trees. There is no recent herbarium material. Therefore, M. rubiginosum is assigned as Data Deficient and should be re-assessed once more observations will clarify its distribution.

This species is not protected by legislation and is not known from any protected area. It is recommended to enforce prospections.
