Salaciopsis sparsiflora is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia, with a large distribution from Plaine des Lacs in the south to Tiebaghi, in the north in Grande Terre. This species is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 150 to 1,300 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 10,951 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 236 km², S. sparsiflora is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


S. sparsiflora is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed, from Plaine des Lacs in the south to Tiébaghi in the north of Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common species.

Habitat


S. sparsiflora occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 150 to 1,300 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and mining activities (Kopeto (SLN), Kouaoua (SLN), Tiebaghi (SLN), Goro (VALE)).

Conservation


S. sparsiflora is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Barrage de Yaté, Montagne des sources, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Pic du Pin, Pic Ningua, Rivière bleue, Aoupinié, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Pourina, Haute Yaté and la Dumbéa.
