Ascarina rubricaulis is an endemic shrub and small tree from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It is also present on the Bélep archipelago. This species is common and it occurs in dense humid forest or forest edges on ultramafic substrate up to 1,500 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 11,340 90 and 388 km², respectively. Therefore, Ascarina rubricaulis is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Ascarina rubricaulis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It also present on the Bélep archipelago.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
This species occurs in dense humid forest or forest borders on ultramafic substrate up to1,500 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Ascarina rubricaulis is unprotected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Mou, Mont Humboldt, Mont Do, Aoupinié, Côte Oubliée, Forêt de Saille, Foret Nord, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Pourina, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources.
