in Northern ProvinceHunga gerontogea is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, restricted to the northwest part of Grande Terre, from Poya to Poum. It is found in shrubland on serpentine substrate up to 450 m asl. The main threats identified come from bushfires and indirectly from mining activities (road construction and urbanization). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 132 and 2,340 km², Hunga gerontogea is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab (ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria and a number of locations greater, but close to 10.
Geographical area
Hunga gerontogea is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the northwest part of Grande Terre, from Poya to Poum.
Population
The population size is unknown.
Habitat
This species occurs in shrubland on serpentine substrate up to 450 m asl.
Threats
The main identified threats come from bushfires and indirectly from mining activities (road construction and urbanization).
Conservation
Hunga gerontogea is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does not occur in any protected areas.
