Hunga mackeeana is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, restricted to the northwest of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Poya to Mont Katepahie, with an extension at Tiébaghi. It is found in shrubland on serpentine substrate up to 700 m asl. The main identified threats come from bushfires and indirectly from mining activities (road construction, soil erosion and urbanisation). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to 60 and 1,326 km², respectively, while the number of locations is estimated to be ten. Therefore Hunga mackeeana is considered Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria.

The population size is not known.

Conservation

Hunga mackeeana is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does not occur in any protected areas. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. It is recommended to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
