Red List Status -Endangered (EN) , assessed in 21/07/2016
Protected species -in Southern Province , in Northern Province
Spiraeanthemum collinum is an endemic shrub/small tree found in central Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known from 4 massifs (Tchingou, Boulinda, MéMaoya, MéJéjéhari). It is found in altitudinal forest on ultramafic substrate. Main threats are potential mining activities in Boulinda. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 1,009 km² and 32 km² while the number of locations are estimated to be four. Spiraeanthemum collinum is therefore assessed as Endangered (EN) with criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a continuing decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.
This species is restricted to central Grande Terre in New Caledonia where it is known from 4 massifs (Tchingou, Boulinda, MéMaoya, MéJéjéhari).
It is known from 4 subpopulations where it is probably not abundant.
It is found in altitudinal forest (750-1,150 m asl) on ultramafic substrate.
Main threats are potential mining activities in Boulinda.
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord but does not occur in any protected area (although it is close to Nodéla reserve). It is recommended to carry ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts, in particular : ensuring the follow-up of known sub-populations, seeds banking and preserving viable populations on delimited perimeters. Patches of humid forest on ultramafic substrates should be protected, as on Tchingou and MéMaoya (extension of Nodela reserve) massif which host several threatened species.
