Pancheria rubrivenia is an endemic shrub of north-east Grande Terre in New Caledonia where it is known from two massifs (Tonine, Grandié). It is found in altitudinal shrubland on volcano-sedimentary substrate. The main threats impacting this species come from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs). Climate change constitute a potential serious threat for this species as it has a narrow altitudinal range (1,030 - 1,070 m asl). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being both estimated to 8 km², Pancheria rubrivenia is considered Endangered (EN) using criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with an estimation of 2 locations and a decline of habitat quality.

Geographical area

This species is restricted to two subpopulations on Tonine and Grandié. Prospections on Grandié are recommended to relocate the population.

Population

This species is locally abundant (on the Tonine) in a very restricted summital area.

Habitat

It is found in altitudinal shrubland (1,030-1,070 m asl) on volcano-sedimentary substrate.

Threats

The main threats impacting this species come from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs). Climate change constitute a potential serious threat for this species as it has a narrow altitudinal range (1,030 - 1,070 m asl).

Conservation

Unprotected by legislation, this species does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to carry prospections on Grandié in order to relocate this species. Ex-situ conservation seems difficult. Generally, it is suggested to study the protection of a part of massif des Lèvres. Moreover, seeds banking seems pertinent.
