It occurs in humid and mesophilous forest on volcano-sedimentary and ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 30 - 1,100 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Diospyros flavocarpa is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord but not in Province Sud. It occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié
