Elaeocarpus brachypodus is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary soil between 500 and 1,400 m asl. Known from more than 10 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 6,993 and 80 km², respectively. The main threats are posed by invasive species and mining activities. Therefore, E. brachypodus is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to VU under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v).

E. brachypodus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre: from the Koghis mountains to the Mé Maoya massif, Tchingou and Tonine massifs, mont Ignambi.

Population


Population size is unknown.

Habitat


E. brachypodus occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary soil between 500 and 1,400 m asl.

Threats


The main threats are posed by invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)) and mining activities at Camp des Sapins (SLN).

Conservation


This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in two protected areas: Forêt de Saille and Mont Humboldt. A taxonomic study is recommended to remove remaining doubts in the brachypodus - comptonii - hortensis species group.
