in Northern ProvinceElaeocarpus colnettianus is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is only known from three summits in the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 1,000 and 1,530 m asl. Known from three locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 62 and 24 km², respectively. The main threat is posed by invasive species, causing habitat degradation. Therefore, E. colnettianus is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii).
Geographical area
E. colnettianus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is only known from three summits in the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre: Panié, Colnett, Ignambi.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. colnettianus occurs in high altitude dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 1,000 and 1,530 m asl.
Threats
The main threat is posed by invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), causing habitat degradation. E. colnettianus could also very well be impacted by climate change in the future, since it only occurs in high altitudes.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. Moreover, further prospection on other neighbouring summits is recommended to better estimate population size and understand threats.
