Elaeocarpus geminiflorus is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the central and northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 500 and 1,400 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 2,658 and 108 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires and invasive species, but globally the species is not threatened. Therefore, E. geminiflorus is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
E. geminiflorus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the central and northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre: from Mont Nakada (Thio) to Mandjélia (Pouébo).
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. geminiflorus occurs in high altitude shrubland dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 500 and 1,400 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), but globally the species is not threatened.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in two protected areas: Aoupinié and Mont Panié. Further prospection and collections are recommended, as very few collections of the species are available to this day.
