in Northern ProvinceElaeocarpus moratii is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 600 and 750 m asl. Known from 3 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 506 and 16 km², respectively. The main threats are bushfires and invasive species, that cause habitat degradation. Therefore, E. moratii is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
E. moratii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northeastern mountain range of Grande Terre: Aoupinié, Mont Panié and Mont Ignambi.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. moratii occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 600 and 750 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), that cause habitat degradation.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in two protected areas: Mont Panié and Aoupinié. The local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort should be informed about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Finally, since few collections of this species have been made, further prospection and collection in the northeastern mountain range is recommended.
