in Northern ProvinceElaeocarpus vieillardii is an endemic tree species from New Caledonia, where it is represented by two infraspecific varieties. The species has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre, where it occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 650 m asl. Known from more than 10 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 6,025 and 60 km², respectively. The main threats are bushfires, invasive species causing habitat degradation and mining activities. Therefore, E. vieillardii is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to VU under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+B2ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
E. vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre: from Prony (Yaté) to Col d'Amos (Ouégoa).
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. vieillardii occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 650 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires, invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), that cause habitat degradation and mining activities at Goro (Vale).
Conservation
This taxon is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. The local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort should be informed about the presence of the taxon in the concerned areas.
