Sloanea haplopoda is an endemic shrub or tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the far south and the east coast of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest, sometimes shrubland and transitional vegetation on ultramafic soil between 200 and 750 m asl. Known from more than 10 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 2,592 and 84 km², respectively. The main threats are bushfires, invasive species (feral pigs, Sus scrofa) and mining activities. Therefore, S. haplopoda is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to VU under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+B2ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
S. haplopoda is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the far south of Grande Terre and the east coast, between Canala and Kouaoua.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is common.
Habitat
S. haplopda occurs in dense humid forest, and sometimes in shrubland ('maquis' vegetaion) and transitional vegetation on ultramafic soil between 200 and 750 m asl.
Threats
Main threats include bushfires and feral pigs (Sus scrofa), causing habitat degradation. The species is also impacted by mining activities at Goro (Vale).
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in four protected areas: Haute Dumbéa, Forêt Cachée, Pic du Pin, Forêt Nord.
