Sloanea lepida is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the center of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest undergrowth on volcano-sedimentary soil between 300 and 525 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 427 and 16 km², respectively. It is threatened by invasive species, mainly rusa deer and feral pigs. Therefore, S. lepida is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii)..

S. lepida is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the center of Grande Terre: col d'Amieu, Boghen, Forêt Plate.

Population


Population size is unknown.

Habitat


S. lepida occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 300 and 525 m asl.

Threats


The main threat is posed by invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)).

Conservation


This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. It is not well known, so further prospection is recommended (Aoupinié, Arago...).This species would benefit from from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions and awarness amongs the local population and it is proposed to ensure the follow-up of the only known subpopulation.
