Sloanea montana is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest, its edges and shrubland ('maquis') on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary soil between 120 and 1,200 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 9,530 and 164 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by mining activities, bushfires and invasive species, but the species does not seem globally threatened. Therefore, S. montana is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. montana is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre: northeast mountain range, Tchamba, Aoupinié, Mé Maoya, Tiébaghi, Poum, far south, Dogny and Col d'Amieu region.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
S. montana occurs in dense humid forest, its edges and shrubland ('maquis') on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary soil between 120 and 1,200 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations are impacted by mining activities (Tiébaghi, SLN), bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), but the species does not seem globally threatened.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in five protected areas: Parc de la Rivière Bleue, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Nodéla, Aoupinié, mont Panié.
