Styphelia coryphila is a shrub endemic to New Caledonia, restricted to the southern massif of Grande Terre. This species is found in scrubland and small forests on ultramafic substrate from 350 to 1,200 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated at 44 and 918 km², respectively, and the species is known from 10 locations. The main pontential threat is habitat degradation by mining activities and fires. However this species does not seem directly threatened at the moment. Therefore, S. coryphila is listed Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
S. coryphila is endemic to New Caledonia restricted to the southern massif of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is not very common.
Habitat
S. coryphila occurs in scrubland and transitional vegetations on ultramafic substrate from 350 to 1,200 m asl.
Threats
The main impact is habitat degradation due to mining activities at Goro (Vale) and fire. However, this species does not seem directly threatened.
Conservation
S. coryphila is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: Barrage de Yaté, Pic du Pin and Massif du Kouakoué. This species should be collected more, and genetic studies are suggested in order to facilitate species identification within this genus.
