Styphelia longistylis is a shrub endemic to New Caledonia, with a scattered distribution in the southern part of Grande Terre. This species is found in scrubland, lake shores or river banks on ultramafic substrate from 100 to 950 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated at 732 km² and 60 km², and it is known from six locations. It is mainly threatened by mining activities. Therefore, S. longistylis is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
S. longistylis is endemic to New Caledonia with a scattered distribution in the southern part of Grande Terre (from Tontouta and Mt. Humboldt to Plaine des Lacs).
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is locally abundant.
Habitat
S. longistylis is found in scrubland, on lake shores or river banks on ultramafic substrate from 100 to 950 m asl.
Threats
The main threat is actual mining actvities at Goro (Vale) and Vulcain (SMGM) and potential mining activities at Creek Pernod.
Conservation
S. longistylis is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any proteced areas. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. This species should be collected more, and genetic studies are suggested in order to facilitate species identification within this genus.
