Hugonia oreogena is a shrub endemic from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the north east of Grande Terre, from Roches de la Ouaième at the southern limit to col d'Amoss at the northern limit. This species occurs in humid forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitude range of 500-1,000 m asl. The main threats identified are uncontrolled bushfires for the lower subpopulations and invasive species (feral pigs and Rusa Deer). Its Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be 232 km² and 68 km² with a number of locations equal to eight. Therefore Hugonia oreogena qualifies as Vulnerable under criteria B1ab (iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Conservation

Hugonia oreogena is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in only one protected area : Mont Panié. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services), responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
