Hugonia penicillanthemum is a small tree endemic from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the Massif du Grand Sud, from the far south of the massif to the northern limit of the massif (Tontouta-Thio). It occurs in maquis on ultramafic substrate up to 700 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Goro and Tontouta. However this species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 2,587 and 384 km² and due to the fact that it is abundant, Hugonia penicillanthemum is therefore listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Hugonia penicillanthemum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the Massif du Grand Sud, from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit of the massif (Tontouta-Thio).
Population
The population size is not known. Based on field observations, this species is very common.
Habitat
This species occurs in maquis on ultramafic substrate up to 700 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities at Goro and Tontouta. However this species is very common and it does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Hugonia penicillanthemum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas : Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Pic du Pin, Barrage de Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine, Côte Oubliée, Forêt cachée, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté.
