Hugonia racemosa is a shrub endemic from New Caledonia. It has a scattered distribution across the Grande Terre between Thio in the south east and col d'Amoss in the north east of Grande Terre. A species of maquis forest on ultramafic substrate, H. racemosa occurs at an altitudinal range 5-1,100 m asl. A continuous decline of population size is projected due to bushfire events and degradations caused by mining activities, which could affect H. racemosa. Known from more than ten locations, its area of occupation (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 124 km² and 2,601 km², respectively. Therefore, Hugonia racemosa is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab (iii,v), with a continuing decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Threats

The main threats are bushfires and degradations caused by mining activities at Cap bocage, Poro, Kouaoua et Tio, that can contribute to the decline of population size and the habitat quality.

Conservation

Hugonia racemosa is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in only one protected area : Mont Panié.
