Melaleuca dawsonii is an endemic shrub or tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre. This common species occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 900 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 1,095 and 44 km², respectively. M. dawsonii is not considered to be threatened and is therefore listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


M. dawsonii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre, from the Ouinné river to Goro.

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations indicate that the species is common and abundant.

Habitat


M. dawsonii occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 900 m asl.

Threats


This abundant species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities (Goro (Vale)) and uncontrolled bushfires.

Conservation


M. dawsonii is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in several protected areas: Barrage de Yaté, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière Bleue, Haute Yaté, Haute Pourina and Montagne des Sources.
