Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium viriosum is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia restricted to the north east of Grande Terre, from Aoupinié to Col d'Amoss. It is found in dense humid forest on volcano sedimentary soil between 10 and 887 m asl. The population size of S. viriosum is unknown. The main threats are bushfires that cause habitat degradation. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 2,231 km² and 48 km², respectively, with an estiamtion of 7 locations. Therefore, S. viriosum is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v), with a potential decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

S. viriosum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the north est of Grande Terre, from Aoupinié to Col d'Amoss.

Population size is unknown.

Conservation
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in only one protected area: Aoupinié. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species and awarness should be raised amongs the local population. Herbarium specimens should be more collected to better estimate its distribution and its extinction risks.
