Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 17/11/2017Rhodamnia andromedoides is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre. This species occurs in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,100 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 1,550 and 80 km², respectively. This species is quite common and locally abundant and does not seem threatened. Therefore, R. andromedoides is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
R. andromedoides is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre, from Plaine des Lacs to Koungouhao (Boulouparis).
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that the species is quite common and abundant.
Habitat
R. andromedoides occurs in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,100 m asl.
Threats
This abundant species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities (Goro (Vale)).
Conservation
R. andromedoides is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it does occur in several protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources and Parc de la Rivière Bleue.
