Syzygium baladense is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia with a large and scattered distribution in Grande Terre, between the far north east, the center and the Massif du Sud. This species is abundant and it is found in dense humid forest or scrubland on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates up to 1,200 m asl. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 18,261 km² and a minimum area of occupancy (AOO) of 176 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, S. baladense is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. baladense is endemic to New Caledonia and it has a large and scattered distribution in Grande Terre, between the far north east, the north east, the center and the Massif du Sud.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. baladense occurs in dense humid forest or scrubland on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates up to 1,200 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires at lower altitudes, invasive species (Rusa timorensis and Sus scrofa) and mining activities at Goro and Kouaoua.
Conservation
S. baladense is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: Rivière bleue, Foret Nord, Cap N'dua, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic du grand Kaori, la Dumbéa, Barrage de Yaté and Haute Dumbéa.
