Syzygium capillaceum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia with a large distribution in Grande Terre. This species is quite common and occurs in dense humid forest and transitional vegetation on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates, up to 700 m asl. Despite having an area of occupancy (AOO) and an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 64 and 6,812 km² respectively, S. capillaceum is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. It is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).

S. capillaceum is an endemic species of New Caledonia with a large distribution in Grande Terre, from the south to the north east .
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. capillaceum occurs in dense humid forest and transitional vegetation on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates, from up to 700 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires (Amos, Poya and Canala) and mining activities at Goro.
Conservation
S. capillaceum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in two protected areas: Aoupinié and Vallée de la Thy. The experts note a high variability in this group and it can also contain multiple taxa that may deserve species-level recognition. This needs to be taken into account in futher potential reseach studies (taxonomic or genetic studies).
