This species is abundant and it occurs in dense humid forest on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic rocks, between 300 to 1,100 m asl. Despite having an area of occupancy (AOO) and an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 124 and 3,115 km² respectively, S. coccineum is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. It is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).
