Syzygium kriegeri is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia restricted to the north west of Grande Terre, from Poya to Tiébaghi. It is found in shrubland on ultramafic soil between 296 and 900 m asl. The population size of S. krieger is unknown. The main threats are bushfires and mining activities that cause habitat degradation. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 1,115 and 56 km², respectively, while the number of locations is estimated to be 9. Therefore, S. kriegeri is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+B2ab(i,ii,iii,v).

S. kriegeri is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the north west of Grande Terre, from Poya to Tiébaghi.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field prospections this species appears not to be common.
Habitat
S. kriegeri occurs in maquis on ultramafic soil between 296 and 900 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires and mining activities at Tiebaghi and potentially at Ouzangou and Koniambo that cause habitat degradation.
Conservation
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species and ex situ and in situ conservation efforts are urgently needed, in particular : ensuring the follow-up of the known sub-populations. Plus it is recommended to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
