Syzygium mouanum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed from the south to the northeastern part of Grande Terre. This species is quite common and it occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic substrates, up to 1,620 m asl. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 9,264 km² and a minimum area of occupancy (AOO) of 224 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, Syzygium mouanum is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


S. mouanum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre, from Goro in the south to Haute Diahot in the north east of Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.

Habitat


S. mouanum occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic substrates, up to 1,620 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted fires, myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) and mining activities at Kouaoua and Goro.

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Foret Nord, Massif du Kouakoué, Chutes de la Madeleine, Pic du grand Kaori, Haute Dumbéa, Vallée de la Thy, Haute Yaté, Rivière bleue, la Dumbéa, Mont Panié, Montagne des sources and Mont Humboldt.
