Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium pancheri is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre. This species is abundant and it is found in dense humid forest, shrubland and riparian vegetation on various substrates (volcano sedimentary, ultramafic and hydromorphic soil), up to 1,020 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 13,383 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 352 km², S. pancheri has no apparent threat, and is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. pancheri is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed from the north to the south of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it appears to be a common species.
Habitat
S. pancheri occurs in dense humid forest, shrubland and riparian vegetation on various substrates (volcano sedimentary, ultramafic and hydromorphyc soil), up to 1,020 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires and mining activities at Tiebaghi, Goro, Kouaoua and Vulcain.
Conservation
S. pancheri is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Forêt cachée, Vallée de la Thy, Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources, Barrage de Yaté, Aoupinié, Mont Panié, Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Dumbéa, Foret Nord, Rivière bleue and la Dumbéa.
