Syzygium paniense is an endemic shrub and tree from New Caledonia restricted tothe north east of Grande Terre, from Mt. Aoupinié to Ouégoa. It is found in dense humid forest on volcano sedimentary soil between 152 and 1,100 m asl. Known from nine localities, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 2,732 and 76 km², respectively. The population size of S. paniense is unknown. The main threats are bushfires for the lower subpopulations and invasive species (Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) that cause habitat degradation. Therefore, S. paniense is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
S. paniense is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the north east of Grande Terre, from Mt. Aoupinié to Ouégoa.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate a species locally abundant.
Habitat
S. paniense occurs in dense humid forest on volcano sedimentary soil between 152 and 1,100 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires for the lower subpopulations and invasive species (Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) that cause habitat degradation.
Conservation
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in two protected areas: Mont Panié and Aoupinié. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species. And it is essential to continue to raise awarness amongs the local population.
