It occurs in forest and shrubland on various substrates at an altitudinal range 50-1,000 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. This species has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the endemic family Phellinaceae. P. erubescens is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem directly threatened due to its large distribution although some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, P. erubescens occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. This species has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the endemic family Phellinaceae.
