Jaffrea erubescens is an endemic tree, up to 1-4 m high, known from 5 subpopulations restricted in the south east coast of Grande Terre and one herbarium specimen collected in Ngoye dated from 1902. This species occurs in shrubland and humid forest on ultramafic substrates, from 200-850 m asl. This species is threatened by bushfires and mining activity that contribute to the decline of its habitat quality. Its extend of occurence (EOO) and area of occurrence (AOO) are estimated to be respectively 852 km² and 32 km² with a number of locations equal to 5. Therefore J. erubescens is considered Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab (ii,iii,v), with a decline of the concerned sub-criteria.

Geographical area

J. erubescens is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted in the south of Grande Terre.

Population

Population size is unknown but based on field observations, this species is locally common at Kuébini in the south of Grande Terre.

Habitat

J. erubescens occurs in shrubland and humid forest on ultramafic substrates, from 200-850 m asl.

Threats

J. erubescens is threatened by bushfires and mining activities at Goro that contribute to the decline of its habitat quality.

Conservation

J. erubescens is only protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in two protected areas: Chutes de la Madeleine, Montagne des sources. This species is subject to a conservation plan program at VALE NC : revegetation program and the monitoring of the success of the revegetation of the species. Prospection at Ngoye is recommended to relocate this species and better estimate its extension risk.
