Jaffrea xerocarpa is an endemic shrub and tree (up to 6 m high) largely distributed in Grande Terre. This species occurs in shrubland and in the margins of humid forest along creeks on ultramafic substrate, sometimes on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary patchwork, up to 1,500 m asl. This species is common and does not seem threatened. Therefore with an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 10,384 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 380 km², J. xerocarpa is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Jaffrea xerocarpa is an endemic species where it is widely distributed from Goro in the south to Mt. Taom in the north of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations indicate a quite common species.
Habitat
Jaffrea xerocarpa occurs in shrubland and in the margins of humid forest along creeks on ultramafic substrate, sometimes on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary patchwork (at Bopope), up to 1,500 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. However, some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and mining activities at Goro, Camp des Sapins, Cap Bocage and Kouaoua.
Conservation
Jaffrea xerocarpa is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy, Mont Humboldt, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Pic du grand Kaori, Pic Ningua, Mont Mou, Pic du Pin, Chutes de la Madeleine, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa.
