Psychotria rubefacta is an endemic shrub, widespread in Grande Terre from Réserve du Mont Panié in the north to Mont Do in the south of New Caledonia. It occurs in dense humid forest at an altitudinal range 0-700 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Psychotria rubefacta is considered Least Concern (LC).
