Psychotria rupicola is an endemic shrub, widespread in Grande Terre from Forêt de Sailles in the north to Port Boisé in the south of New Caledonia. It occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 0-1,400 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Psychotria rupicola is considered Least Concern (LC).
