It occurs in forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 250 to 700 m asl. This species is common in forest. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires and animal invasives (Rusa deer, feral pigs), but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 3,875 and 104 km², respectively. Therefore, Tarenna unioensis is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Tarenna unioensis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed in the northern part of Grande Terre, from Ouraï to Diahot.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
This species occurs in forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 250 to 700 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires and animal invasives (Rusa deer, feral pigs), but globally this species does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Tarenna unioensis is unprotected by legislation in New Caledonia and it occurs in three protected areas : Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Aoupinié.
