Gongrodiscus bilocularis is an endemic tree (up to 15 m high) widely distributed from the south to the north east of Grande Terre. This species occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,050m asl. This species is common and does not seem threatened. Therefore with an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 8,782 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 328 km², G. bilocularis is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


Gongrodiscus bilocularis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed from Goro in the south to Mandjelia in the north east part of Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations indicate a quite common species.

Habitat


Gongrodiscus bilocularis occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,050m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem globally threatened. However, some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and mining activities at Goro.

Conservation


Gongrodiscus bilocularis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue, Pic du grand Kaori, Aoupinié, Barrage de Yaté, Forêt de Saille, Foret Nord, Haute Pourina.
