Gongrodiscus sufferrugineus is an endemic tree (up to 5 m high) largely distributed from the southern part to the northeastern part of Grande Terre. This species occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate and humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,200 m asl. This species is common and does not seem threatened. Therefore with an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 6,700 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 144 km², G. sufferrugineus is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Gongrodiscus sufferrugineus is endemic to New Caledonia where it has a large and discontinuous distribution in Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations indicate a quite common species.
Habitat
Gongrodiscus sufferrugineus occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate and humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,200 asl.
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatenend. However, some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires.
Conservation
Gongrodiscus sufferrugineus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in 3 protected areas: Aoupinié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Rivière bleue.
