Storthocalyx pancheri is an endemic shrub restricted in the Grand Massif Sud of New Caledonia with the exception of an isolated northern subpopulation where the type specimen was collected at Baie Duperré (Canala), a site where the plant was not been seen for more than 150 years. This species is also observed at Arago but herbarium specimens are required to confirm these localities. This species occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 500 m asl. This species is common and does not seem threatened. Therefore, despite having an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 1,435 km² and a minimum Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 324 km², S. sordidus is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
